My Moroccan side has always been a place of mystery. A place that is filled with ambivalence and unanswered questions. Being raised in a Bajan household where the food and music celebrates Caribbean Culture, I've naturally leaned towards my Black side. However, I've always yearned to understand my Arab roots, in the hope that this gap in my identity will help me to understand the unresolved parts of myself.
The monochromatic hues of greens and blues represent the decorative colours and designs of Morocco. I named this painting after my late Grandmother Fadilah, who lived in Morocco and only spoke in Arabic. This meant that our distance became even wider and farther away. However, I always felt an undeniable pull that she too, yearned for a connection.
